I Will Be Whiter Than Snow | Life Performance: Grand Parade Campus, Brighton University, Brighton, Uk | Duration: 10.00 minutes | 2013
The continuous and eternal alternation of sinfulness and attempted purity within the body is the central theme explored in this durational ritual. Mark-making on the skin surface, and its cleaning with water serve as symbols to make visible this internal struggle. The performance plays on the concept of repetition not in the sense of a pedantic reiteration of an act but from the christian perspective of remembering and re-living. Thus, each act, although following the same structure and oppressive list of rules, is novel because it is informed by the previous one. In other words, performance is an experience of adding layer upon layer on the body through the writing of new narratives and experiences on the skin surface.
