Based in Malta
Umberto Buttigieg is an art practitioner, researcher and curator. His practice is interdisciplinary and includes photo manipulation, collage, pastiche, video art, performance and installations. Areas of special interest include art as it intersects with daily life routines, mundane rituals, social issues, politics and the fusion of collective memory and contemporary trends. Buttigieg has co-curated and exhibited in numerous collective and collaborative exhibitions and events. His projects are interdisciplinary and inter-textual, fusing together research, practice and curation.
Buttigieg is a founding member and Board Secretary of the Gabriel Caruana Foundation and presently curates exhibitions and projects at the Mill, Arts, Culture and Crafts Centre in Birkirkara on behalf of Gabriel Caruana who is the Honourary Director of the Foundation. He was also co-founder of dissemiNation, a group of six international young artists based in Brighton, U.K. Buttigieg earned a Masters of Arts in Fine Art (2013) with distinction at the University of Brighton. He focused on Performance and Video Art in his practice, researching on the performing body in Ritualistic Art and repetitive practices. He read for a B.A.(Hons) Degree in History of Art at the University of Malta (2010), presenting a dissertation on Post-War Modernist Tendencies and the Birth of Conceptual, Minimal and Video Art in Malta. |
